Choosing the Right Kiwi Camping Tent

Camping in New Zealand is all about fresh air, freedom, and enjoying the outdoors. The right tent depends on your style of camping — and it’s easy once you break it down.

How will you get to your campsite — hiking, short carry, or driving in?
How many people need to sleep inside
What weather do you expect?

Step 1. Match Tent to Camping Style

Hiking in: Keep it light. Choose a compact 1–3 person tent that fits in your pack or can be shared between hikers.

Short carry (walk-in sites): Mid-sized tents are ideal. Balance weight with comfort — big enough to relax in, light enough to haul a few hundred metres.

Drive-in camping: Weight is less of an issue. Size is only limited by your vehicle and campsite space, so go bigger for comfort, multiple rooms, and standing height.

Step 2. Choose the Right Size

Choosing the right size comes down to three things:

Sleeping space: Match the tent to your group size. If you want more comfort or extra gear inside, size up.
Room layout: Decide if you need separate rooms for privacy (handy for families or groups) or a single open space.
Living space: Think about how much time you’ll spend inside the tent. Will you relax and cook under cover, or use a separate shelter or awning for that?

Step 3. Match the Season

Summer only: Look for ventilation, shade options, and easy-pitch designs for quick escapes.

All-season use: Choose tougher fabrics, reinforced poles, and heavy rain protection. Double-wall tents or canvas handle NZ’s wind and rain best.
